This species is uncommon. It inhabits wetlands of lowlands and foothills, up to 1,000m in India, Bhutan, Myanmar, Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia. In Laos, this species is vulnerable to local extinction (BirdLife International 2016).

According to the IUCN Red List Assessment, the population of this species is declining, with the current population estimate of 10,000-50,000 individuals. The threat to its persistence comes from habitat disturbance due to overfishing, agriculture and other human encroachments (BirdLife International 2016).
