This species is uncommon. It inhabits undergrowth open pine forests on hilly regions of China and India (in Arunachal Pradesh) at the heights of 2,400m-3,400m (BirdLife International 2017).

According to the IUCN Red List assessment, the population of this species is declining and its current population size is unknown. The threat to its persistence comes from habitat disturbance due to forest fires and logging (BirdLife International 2017).
