This species is uncommon. It inhabits coastal swamps and lowland marshes with rich flora and fauna. It is migratory, breeding on saline and brackish water bodies in Siberia, Kazakhstan, and Russia during spring and summer seasons, and wintering on the same spot where it bred. The population of the European region is fully migratory, for wintering, it flies to warmer regions like India, Japan, Egypt, Afghanistan, Philippines, Thailand, and Canary Islands (BirdLife International 2019).

According to the IUCN Red List Assessment, the population of this species is declining and the current population size is unknown. The threat to its persistence comes from habitat disturbance due to fisheries and other anthropogenic activities. Adult survival is also low due to predation, hunting, and trapping (BirdLife International 2019).
