This species is uncommon. It inhabits inland wetlands and grasslands of tropical and tundra region, up to 2,400m. It is migratory, breeding in Russia, Scandinavia, Poland, Ukraine, and Kazakhstan during May-June and wintering in North African regions and South Asian regions. It mostly forages upon worms, molluscs, and insects (BirdLife International 2017).
Conservation Status:

According to the IUCN Red List assessment, the population of this species is declining, with the current population estimate of 80,000-660,000 individuals. The threats to its persistence come from habitat disturbance due to agriculture and climate change (BirdLife International 2017).
