This species is uncommon. It inhabits shores near slow-moving water bodies in India, Nepal, Myanmar, Cambodia, Thailand, Laos, Malaysia and Vietnam. It mostly forages on water snakes and freshwater fish (BirdLife International 2017).

According to the IUCN Red List assessment, the population of this species is declining, with the current population estimate of 10,000-100,000 individuals. The threats to its persistence come from habitat disturbance due to deleterious mercury deposition, and illegal hunting for meat (BirdLife International 2017).
