This species is uncommon. It inhabits evergreen and deciduous forests(up to 2,000m) in India, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, and Vietnam. It mostly forages on birds including pheasants and small mammals including squirrels (BirdLife International 2018).

According to the IUCN Red List assessment, the population of this species is declining and its current population size is unknown. The threat to its persistence comes from habitat disturbance due to deforestation (BirdLife International 2018).
