Subspecies in India

Photo Gallery and Species Biology
This species is uncommon. It inhabits remote inland wetlands and intertidal zones of the coastal regions. It breeds colonially in remote areas of India (mainly in Gujarat), Ethiopia, Kenya, and Tanzania. It mainly forages on microalgae and small invertebrates of the saline water bodies (BirdLife International 2018).
Conservation Status:

According to the IUCN Red List assessment, the population of this species is declining. Lastly, the recorded population was estimated at 2,220,000-3,240,000 individuals and its current population size is unknown. The threat to its persistence comes from breeding habitat disturbance due to mining and quarrying (BirdLife International 2018).
