This species is uncommon. It inhabits tall trees of open woodlands on the hills (100m-3,800m) in India, Bhutan, Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia, and Laos. It is an altitudinal migrant. It feeds on seeds, fruits, flowers and leaf buds (BirdLife International 2017).
