This species is rare in India. It inhabits subtropical and temperate forests in North-east India (mainly in Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Manipur, and Nagaland), Bhutan, Myanmar, and China, at the heights of 1,800m-3,300m asl. It is an altitudinal migrant, it inhabits up to the heights of 1,400m during winter and 3,300m during summer (BirdLife International 2017).
