This species is rare in India. It inhabits subtropical and temperate forests in North-east India (mainly in Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Manipur, and Nagaland), Bhutan, Myanmar, and China, at the heights of 1,800m-3,300m asl. It is an altitudinal migrant, it inhabits up to the heights of 1,400m during winter and 3,300m during summer (BirdLife International 2017).

The threat to its persistence comes from habitat disturbance due to deforestation. Another major threat to this species is hunting for meat and feather (mainly in Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland) (BirdLife International 2017).
