This species is uncommon. It inhabits inland wetlands and slow-moving freshwater bodies of India (mostly north region), Myanmar, Bangladesh, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam (BirdLife International 2016).

This species is listed as Near Threatened in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species (https://www.iucnredlist.org/)According to the IUCN Red List assessment, the population of this species is declining, with the current population estimate of 10,000-19,999 individuals. The threats to its persistence come from habitat disturbance due to agriculture and commercial developments, hunting, and egg poaching (BirdLife International 2016).
