This species is uncommon. It inhabits remote lowland forests and shrublands in India, Myanmar, Cambodia, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, and the Solomon Islands, at 700m asl. It breeds in dense colonies. It depends on the forest vegetation for foraging (BirdLife International 2016).
This species is listed as Near Threatened in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species (https://www.iucnredlist.org/)According to the IUCN Red List assessment, the population of this species is declining and its current population size is unknown. The threat to its persistence comes from hunting for food and gastroliths. Another threat to this species is habitat disturbance due to deforestation for agriculture.
