This species is uncommon. It inhabits evergreen and deciduous forests on the hilly regions of central and south India and Sri Lanka. It possibly forages on fruits (BirdLife International 2016).

According to the IUCN Red List assessment, the population of this species is declining and its current population size is unknown. The threat to its persistence comes from habitat disturbance due to large-scale agriculture and other human encroachments (BirdLife International 2016).
