This species is rare. It inhabits forests of mountainous regions at the heights of 200m to 2,470m asl. It is migratory, breeding in India (mainly in Meghalaya, Mizoram, and Nagaland) and Bhutan. During the non-breeding seasons, it migrates to Sri Lanka, China, and Thailand (BirdLife International 2017).

According to the IUCN Red List Assessment, the population of this species has remained stable, with the current population estimate of 250-700 individuals. The threat to its persistence comes from habitat disturbance may be due to logging, currently, major threats are unknown (BirdLife International 2017).
