Aquila rapax - Tawny Eagle



This species was widespread in Africa and Asia but it underwent a rapid decline in some regions leading downfall of its population. It has possibly undergone extirpation from Morocco. It inhabits grasslands and shrublands of savanna or semi-arid areas of India, Iran, Israel, Ethiopia, and Zimbabwe, from the sea level up to 3,000m. It forages on small mammals, birds, amphibians, and also on carcasses (BirdLife International 2018).

This species is listed as Vulnerable in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species (https://www.iucnredlist.org/).


According to the IUCN Red List Assessment, the population of this species is rapidly declining, with the current population estimate of 100,000-499,999 individuals. A major threat to this species is poisoning by consuming poisoned carrions of feral dogs. Another known threat affecting the breeding population is climate change causing less rainfall (BirdLife International 2018).
