This species is uncommon. It inhabits dense undergrowth of the evergreen forests (150m-3,000m) in India and Myanmar (BirdLife International 2018).

This species is listed as Near Threatened in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species (https://www.iucnredlist.org/)According to the IUCN Red List assessment, the population of this species is declining, with the current population estimate of 6,000-15,000 individuals. The threat to its persistence is not fully understood. The possible threat is habitat disturbance due to logging and shifting agriculture (BirdLife International 2018).
