This species is uncommon. It inhabits inshore waters of the neritic zone and mostly forages on fish and squids. It is migratory, breeding colonially on offshore islands of Russia, Japan, Republic of Korea, and China during March-June and wintering in Australia, India, Philippines, and Vietnam (BirdLife International 2018).

According to the IUCN Red List assessment, the population of this species is declining, with the lastly recorded population size of approx. 3,000,000 individuals. The threat to its persistence comes from predator attacks and climate change (BirdLife International 2018).
