This species is uncommon. It inhabits steppe and wetlands of semi-arid areas up to 4,000m. It is migratory, breeding in Kazakhstan, Russia, China, Romania, Azerbaijan and Turkey, and wintering in Southeast Europe, North Africa, and in the Indian subcontinent (BirdLife International 2018).

According to the IUCN Red List assessment, the population of this species is declining, with the current population estimate of 18,000-30,000 individuals. The threat to its persistence comes from breeding habitat disturbance due to large-scale agricultural practices and overgrazing (BirdLife International 2018).
