This species is uncommon. It inhabits inland wetlands and grasslands of the coastal regions. It is migratory, breeding on the cold coasts of Alaska, Canada, Russia, Iceland, Greenland, and Norway, and for wintering, it migrates to the southern coastal regions such as in India, Iran, Republic of Korea, Japan, Germany, Turkey, and Mexico. After the breeding season, the males leave their females and gather in a small group for the moulting period (BirdLife International 2018).

This species is listed as Vulnerable in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species (https://www.iucnredlist.org/).According to the IUCN Red List Assessment, the population of this species is declining and the current population size is unknown. The threat to its persistence comes from gillnet fisheries, oil, and petroleum pollution leading to habitat destruction (BirdLife International 2018).
