This species is uncommon and endemic to the Andaman Islands. It inhabits tall trees of the islands (BirdLife International 2017).

According to the IUCN Red List assessment, the population of this species is declining, with the current estimate of 2,500-9,999 individuals. The threat to its persistence comes from habitat disturbnace due to logging, overgrazing, and agriculture (BirdLife International 2017).
