This species is uncommon. It inhabits inland wetlands and freshwater marshes of open forests of India, Cambodia, Australia, Myanmar, and Papua New Guinea. This species has extirpated from Pakistan, Thailand, and possibly extirpated from Bangladesh. It breeds in the wetlands during May-August. It mostly forages in the wheat and paddy fields, and also on fish from water bodies (BirdLife International 2016).

According to the IUCN Red List assessment, the population of this species is declining and its current population size is unknown. This species is threatened by numerous factors including habitat disturbance due to large-scale agriculture, overgrazing, capturing to zoos and other human encroachments (BirdLife International 2016).
