This species is uncommon. It inhabits inland wetlands and grasslands with plenty of arthropods and small vertebrates. It is migratory, breeding in Belarus, Serbia, Bulgaria, Moldova, Kazakhstan, and China, and wintering in South Africa and Kenya (BirdLife International 2018).
