This species is uncommon. It inhabits inland wetlands and grasslands with plenty of arthropods and small vertebrates. It is migratory, breeding in Belarus, Serbia, Bulgaria, Moldova, Kazakhstan, and China, and wintering in South Africa and Kenya (BirdLife International 2018).

According to the IUCN Red List assessment, the population of this species is declining, and its current population size is unknown.
