This endemic species of the Indian Subcontinent is rare. It inhabits deciduous forests in hilly areas (at the heights of 1,800m-2,700m) of India (mainly in Kashmir, the Western Ghats, and the Nilgiri Hills), Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. It is migratory, breeding in temperate-deciduous forests during May-June and wintering in open and estate areas of the forest, during October-March (BirdLife International 2016).

According to the IUCN Red List Assessment, the population of this species is declining, with the current population estimate of 1,500-1,700 individuals. The threat to its persistence comes from habitat disturbance due to agriculture, timber extraction and overgrazing for domestic livestock (BirdLife International 2001).
