This species is rare. It inhabits inland wetlands and forests of India (mainly in West Bengal), Bangladesh, Cambodia, Indonesia, and Malaysia, from the sea level up to 1,220m. (BirdLife International 2016).
Conservation Status:

According to the IUCN Red List Assessment, the population of this species is declining, with the current population size estimated at 600-1,700 individuals. The threat to its persistence comes from habitat disturbance due to agriculture, oil spills and other human encroachments (BirdLife International 2016).
