This species is uncommon. It inhabits the coniferous and temperate forests of the Himalayas (mainly of Arunachal Pradesh, India), China and Myanmar, from the height of 3,000m to 4,500m asl. It is an altitudinal migrant. It congregates during winters and disperses during the spring season for breeding (BirdLife International 2016).

According to the IUCN Red List Assessment, the population of this species is declining, with the current population size estimated at 2,500-9,999 individuals. Hunting for food and feathers is the primary threat for this species. Another threat to its persistence comes from habitat disturbance due to logging (BirdLife International 2016).
