This species is uncommon. It inhabits inshore water bodies and the neritic zone. It is migratory, breeding in loose colonies in offshore islands of Russia and Japan during April, and wintering in India, Israel, United Arab Emirates, Portugal, and Somalia (BirdLife International 2018).

According to the IUCN Red List assessment, the population of the species is stable, with the current population estimate of 65,000-260,000 individuals. Numerous threats to this species were being recorded such as predator attacks, breeding habitat disturbance, and other human encroachments (BirdLife International 2018).
