This species is rare. It inhabits inland wetlands, deltas, and coastal areas. It is migratory, breeding in Greece, Armenia, Turkey, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, and Russia. For wintering, the European population migrates to Bulgaria, Austria, Turkey, and Greece, and the Central Asian population migrates to India (mainly Gujarat), Iran and Iraq . This species has undergone extirpation in Germany, Croatia, North Macedonia, and Hungary (BirdLife International 2016).

According to the IUCN Red List assessment, the population of this species is declining, with the current population estimate of 11,400-13,400 individuals. There are numerous threats to this species including hunting, pollution and other human encroachments (BirdLife International 2016).
