This non-migrant species is rare. It inhabits inland wetlands and grasslands of India (mostly in West Bengal, Assam, and Manipur), elevating from 200m up to 1,000m. This species congregates in small groups of at most 12 individuals and breeds between the period January to May (BirdLife International 2017).

According to the IUCN Red List Assessment, the population of this species is declining, with the current population size estimated at 1,000-2,499 individuals. The threat to its persistence comes from habitat disturbance due to agriculture and other human encroachments (BirdLife International 2017).
