This species is uncommon. It is migratory, breeding in coniferous forests of the western Himalaya of Pakistan at the heights of 2,000m-3,600m and wintering in the Western Ghats and the Deccan hillocks of India (BirdLife International 2019).

This species is listed as Near Threatened in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species (https://www.iucnredlist.org/)According to the IUCN Red List assessment, the population of this species is declining, and its current population size is unknown. The threat to its persistence comes from habitat disturbance due to timber extraction, firewood cutting, livestock grazing, and other human encroachments (BirdLife International 2019).
