This species is rare. It inhabits the marine coastal areas, foraging on small aquatic animals. It is migratory, breeding on steep coastal cliffs in U.S.A, Canada, Greenland, Western Europe and Russia, wintering in Mauritania, Senegal, Egypt, Trinidad, and Mongolia. This species congregates forming colonies during the breeding season and later disperses during migration reaching different wintering grounds (BirdLife International 2018).

According to the IUCN Red List Assessment, the population of this species is declining and currently, its population size is unknown. The major threat to this species is the low availability of prey due to oil spills and pollutions on the large water bodies, leading to low reproductive potential (BirdLife International 2018).
